Running your own small business can be rewarding and exciting. You can be in control of your own life and make decisions for yourself. You can have the flexibility with your schedule to set your own work/life balance, and you can make the time for what matters most to YOU. If you want to go to your best friend’s wedding, you can do it without asking permission from your boss. Because you ARE the boss. There’s a tremendous sense of freedom when YOU set the direction, rather than taking direction from someone else.
Yes, small business owners work a lot of hours and they work very hard — but the thing is, that most of them LOVE doing it. One reason is because there’s a direct correlation between how hard you work and how successful you are; it’s up to you! If you follow your passion, the long hours don’t seem like work at all. Because you’re doing what you love to do.
AT RMSP, we are huge proponents for entrepreneurship. And yes, there are risks involved and stress that comes from being on your own. But anything worth doing challenges us and it’s a different sort of stress. Contrary to the stress you feel when you’re working a job that you don’t love doing, when it’s your own business, you’re steering the ship. The stress you feel is in your control! You’re the person making the decisions. And one of the best things about running your own business is that you choose the people you work with. You can surround yourself with positive people who move your business forward.

Aside from the tremendous sense of pride and independence that owning your own business brings, many studies say that, on average, entrepreneurs are happier and healthier than people who work for someone else. A study of grads from the Wharton School determined that those running their own businesses ranked themselves happier than all other professions, regardless of how much money they made. Small business owners seem to just have a better work-life balance, more job satisfaction, and an overall feeling of positivity that’s lacking in the regular workforce.
If this makes you excited, and you want to take these steps, we want you to feel prepared! There’s a lot to learn about how to start a successful business, so we have built a Business Startup Checklist to get your planning started.
