October’s Assigment- It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s the Sky!

Here in Montana, it’s known as “Big Sky Country” and for good reason. There’s always something different going on in the sky from moment to moment, day to day, week to week, etc. With another change of seasons upon us, our optimistic selves thought it would be a good time to encourage you to get outside and look up! What’s going in your daily sky? Fly-by’s by winged aircraft? Birds of a feather? Fire and smoke? Cloud collages? Leaves taking flight? Celestial bodies in rotation?

With this assignment, the sky’s the limit…literally. Specifically, we will ask you to submit 3 to 5 images that tell the story of the sky above in your own environment.  We encourage to do so in real time for the purposes of this assignment and not simply go back to your image vault. There will be other times we will open an assignment for older images, just not this one. We really would like to see your personal version of Big Sky Country in your own neck of the woods. Any sky-related images are acceptable.

Submitting images:

Please send all submissions to bobm@rmsp.com. All images should be in jpeg format, 72 ppi, with the longest side of your image measuring 600px.

Deadline:

October 18, 2011
Submitted images will appear in an online gallery on Paper Airplanes, RMSP’s blog on October 21, 2011. All images will be used in the online gallery for this specific assignment only and will be copyrighted to the photographer. An email confirmation that your submission was received will be sent by October 21th.  If you do not receive the email confirmation, please contact bobm@rmsp.com.

Bob McGowan
A Southern California native, Bob came to Montana and to RMSP as a Career Training student in 2004 to attend both the Summer and Digital Intensive courses. His love of photography began in high school and he decided that a career change in pursuit of this passion was in store after spending the previous 20 years of employment in retail management. After completing the program, Missoula felt like home to him so he pursued a job on staff with the school, and as a result, currently holds the Programs Specialist position. His day-to-day activities at the school involve discussing photography with many like-minded individuals interested in learning more about their passion.

This sentence has a line through it on my browser.Does that mean yes or no to older images?—”We encourage to do so in real time for the purposes of this assignment and not simply go back to your image vault. There will be other times we will open an assignment for older images, just not this one.”

It means yes, John. We are opening it up to whatever images are sent to us regardless of when they were shot. Ideally, we encourage participants to submit work they shoot specifically for this “assignment,” but we realize that people have busy lives and we’d like to get as many submissions as we can. So, any work you’d like to submit we’ll be happy to share.

      Hi Debra,

Anyone is welcome to submit images regardless of what courses they’ve taken with us. YES, YES, YES! Send them along and I look forward to seeing them and sharing them. Thank you!

    Hi Jane,

We post the assignments on our blog approximately at the same time we post the gallery from the previous month’s assignment. We send out the email notification once per month but we post things on our blog constantly. If you see the dates in the assignment post when we will be posting the gallery, that is when the next month’s assignment will be posted. Does that make sense? Even if you send us your images after the gallery is posted, we’re able to add them to the gallery any time. Feel free to send in what you would like as soon as you are ready. Thank you for being interested in doing so!

      Hi Sara,

I’ve verified your email address in our database and I can confirm that you are definitely being sent the updates we send out on a monthly basis. I’ll ask you to please email me with your current address just to make sure it is the correct one. My email is bobm@rmsp.com.

Another suggestion is to review your email spam folder. Sometimes spam filters will trap mass-type emails such as ours thinking it’s spam. You may have to change your filter settings in order to receive these into your inbox.

      Hopefully this helps!

      Bob
